Our Whakapapa

The name Te Kotahi a Tāmaki was given by a local kaumātua of Tāmaki Makaurau, to encourage unity and enable collective impact.

The collective began as a kōrero at Manurewa marae among five marae made up of mana whenua and mataawaka to explore the possibility of a Māori marae profile booklet.

A steering group was formed along with a kaumātua taumata to oversee and guide this process. The organisation was accepted by marae as a representative cultural-collective on 13 January 2018 and became a Charitable Trust on 26th March 2021.

The collective reinforces marae as recognised centres of cultural excellence and enterprise for our communities. By working together to share skills, knowledge and build whakawhanaungatanga (relationships) creating opportunities and transformational change for whānau, hapū and iwi.

Our Marae Collective

Each marae have a moemoeā (vision) that they aspire to achieve maintaining their own mana motuhake. Te Kotahi a Tāmaki – Marae Collective looks to support and accelerate that journey, to thrive and build resilience.

  • Fully realise and utilise the multifunctional purpose of marae for Māori and all community members
  • Return tangihanga to marae in urban centres
  • Reconnect whānau Māori to marae as holistic wellbeing hubs
  • Ensure equity of funding and support amongst marae
  • Disrupt the processes of individualism and promote the benefits of collectivism for whānau Māori
  • Reduce marae operating in isolation
  • Mentor, support, promote and empower marae – recentre marae as hubs

Our Growth

The idea of the collective began among five marae made up of mana whenua and mataawaka to explore the possibility of a Marae Profile publication. 

A steering group was formed along with a kaumātua taumata to oversee and guide this process. The interest grew and a marae collective in Tāmaki Makaurau was formed. The organisation was accepted by marae as a representative cultural-collective on 13 January 2018 and became a Charitable Trust on 26th March 2021.
