About this Marae

Pepeha

Awataha Marae constantly strives to provide services that draw people to come together. It is a place that teaches and preserves ancient Māori knowledge, narratives and customs. We endeavour to advance Māori culture, health, education and economic development initiatives that create self sustaining revenues.Awataha Marae is a community organisation. It consists of a special place and its peoples. It is very much a vibrant entity with a head, a heart and a body. The Marae is the heart, steeped in a rich spiritual and cultural heritage. While Awataha Marae is described as an "Urban Marae" its roots are in both its people and its spiritual antecedents. While it is connected this way it will always have its heritage. Most importantly, Awataha is connected to its spiritual head, Tane Whakapiripiri – he himself is the gatherer and connector of people – he tangata, he tangata, he tangata. We seek to connect to all people and all communities.
