Motairehe Marae, located in Katherine Bay on the northwest coast, has the wharenui Whakaruruhau, opened in 1983. Serving Ngātiwai ki Aotea, descendants of Manaia, the marae is a tribute to Uncle Peter Davies, whose leadership made the marae’s development possible.

Motairehe Marae is located in Motairehe Whaanga (Katherine Bay) on the northwestern coast of Aotea (Great Barrier Island).The wharenui is named Whakaruruhau, a place of shelter and was named by Aunty Whetu Mcgregor. The whare was opened in 1983. A special Tribute to our uncle Peter Davies our chief of Motairehe, without him in charge of this development we would not have it – moe mai ra.We call ourselves the hapu of Ngātiwai ki Aotea, we are the direct descendants of Manaia of the Iwi of Ngatiwai.
