In 1966, the Otara Marae Steering Committee was established by the Otara Māori Committee. By 15 April 1972, the committee opened the first stage of Ngāti Otara Marae (ex-Otaahuhu Social Security building) on a plot of reserve land provided by Manukau City Council. This reserve was later named Ngaati Otara Park. The committee opened the first stage of the marae from a re-purposed former Otaahuhu Social Security building. In 1974, the committee undertook major fundraising. Later in 1982, the Ngaati Otara Marae Society was incorporated. In February 1991, a new wharenui was opened and dedicated to Te Rongonui o Naki. The wharenui was designed by Rewi Thompson and built by Te Rataau Trust which utilised the PEP scheme.Situated on the boundaries of Ngaati Otara Park and Alexander Crescent, this marae also includes a Koohanga Reo. The marae society is currently working on a major project with Otara Scorpions and Auckland Council to build a multi-sports building that includes relocating the marae on a new site within Ngaati Otara Park.Whakatauki: Ko tou rourou, ko taku rourou, ka ora ai te iwiKawa: Tainui Kawa: Tu mai, tu atu.
