"Tenei te Tira Hou tenei te haere ake nei.Te Kotahi a Tūhoe ka kata te po

Tuhoe moumou kai moumou taongamoumou tangata ki te po e."

Te Tira Hou marae originated as a Presbyterian Church for Tūhoe people within Tāmaki Makaurau, many of whom were parishioners. Over time and as membership declined, Rangatira John Rangihau, Sir John Turei and others, approached both Ngati Whātua and Tainui to allow Tūhoe to convert the church into a marae. To ensure Tūhoe had a place to practice its Kawa and Tikanga. In 1972, as a result of this tono to the Ahi Kā Mana Whenua, Tūhoe were given the blessing to transform the church to a marae.Te Tira Hou marae has a unique feature in that all the carvings were the work of Tūhoe whanaunga John Rua who is handicapped. Of note, the marae carvings are not firmly grounded. This has occurred for two reasons. Firstly, if Tūhoe decide to take Te Tira Hou marae back to Tūhoe, this can then be easily accommodated. Secondly, as the land belongs to Ngāti Whātua and Tainui it is not tika for Tūhoe to takahi the mana whenua.Te Tira Hou marae was established in 1975 and was converted from a Presbyterian Church in to a marae. The church was gifted to Tūhoe rangatira: Sir John Turei, John Rangihau, Te Purewa Biddle, Hori Tait, and Whaea Haupai Tawhara Roka Mclean, Kuini Ipo Te Ao Biddle.
